The Doi Tung Project including Royal villa and Mae Fah Luang Garden was started by the mother of the present Thai king.
Her name was HRH Princess Srinagarindra, the Princess Mother and his name is Bhumibol Adulyadej, Rama IX.
Doi Tung is so much more than the Royal Villa and the Mae Fah Luang Garden.
The project was started by the Princess Mother to stop slash and burn in the mountains, to stop poppy cultivation, to give the hill tribes an alternative crop and income, to give the hill tribes legal rights, ID-cards, a Ceramics Production Facility, Vocational training centres for sewing, weaving and mulberry paper production, Drug Treatment and Rehabilitation Centre, Mae Fah Luang Arboretum, etc etc.
The ideas behind the Doi Tung project have been adopted by other countries and similar projects have been started in Afghanistan and Indonesia.
The road up to Doi Tung is very beautiful and it goes up to almost 1400 meters above sea level.
There is a guided tour in the Royal Villa, the incredibly popular Princess's mother summer house. From the Royal Villa we have mountain views that are very beautiful!
Just beside the Royal villa is Mae Fa Luang Garden that the Princess Mother started to build and it is a very beautiful garden.
There is a famous and important temple, Wat Phrathat Doi Tung, maybe 7 km north of Doi Tung Royal Villa. And a couple of hundred meters from the temple is a stupa that is a very popular place with fantastic views.
Just before the stupa you can find many funny and strange sculptures. You can see some in our Photo Gallery.
There is also a Zoo not far away or as they call it, Wildlife Research/Breeding Center. The photos from there are more than 12 years old so the animals might not be there any more.
